About the Course

Timothy Gordon conducts a week-long contemporary classical dance programme in January 2012 (see dates above) in Auckland, New Zealand. The programme includes Floor Barre classes, Classical Ballet classes, Classical Variations/Repertoire classes, Contemporary classes (new), Contemporary Repertoire classes, Open Rehearsal and Informal Showing.

This dance intensive is for all dancers who wish to refine their dancing, develop their technique, refresh their interest, and further explore the art of dance. The course aims to provide a thorough and engaging experience of dance and delivers a unique blend of classes that will inform and inspire.

Floor Barre
Mon-Sat, 9:00-9:40 (40 min)
The floor barre work is vital for implementing understanding of the basics of dance technique.
The floor barre gives time to articulate, extend and strengthen the range of motion in the entire body, facilitating greater stability and control. The floor barre isolates the correct use of muscular action necessary for supporting and sustaining correct alignment. It delivers a powerful process to use as a pre-class, rehearsal and performance warm up. It is also widely known for its use in injury prevention and recovery programmes. This class is open to all levels.

Classical Ballet
Mon-Sat, 9:45-11:15 (90 min)
Suitable for intermediate, advanced and professional levels. Open class work focusing on the correct execution of combinations, refinement of technique, rhythm and artistry.

Classical Variations/Repertoire
Mon-Sat, 11:30-13:15 (105 min)
A selection of variations and ensemble/duet work will be taught, polished and informally staged from the ballet repertoire. There will be about 20 minutes pointe work practice for female students and turning techniques for male students at the beginning of the class.
The week’s rehearsals will culminate in an informal showing on the Saturday afternoon. Students must be prepared to commit to the whole week’s rehearsal period with Classical Ballet classes. This class will be assisted by Chiara Ferri.

Contemporary
Mon-Fri: 14:00-15:00 (60 min)
A class of contemporary dance techniques and somatic movement practices.

Contemporary Repertoire
Mon-Fri: 15:00-17:00 (120 min)
The Contemporary Repertoire which will be taught in the intensive may include Timothy Gordon choreographing on the students and/or teaching selected repertoire from Company Z Dance*.
The week’s rehearsals will culminate in an informal showing on the Saturday afternoon. Students must be prepared to commit to the whole week’s rehearsal period alongside the Contemporary classes. This class will be assisted by Katie Priffitt
*Company Z Dance (charitable trust 2006) is an Auckland based dance company with numerous original contemporary dance works in its repertoire

Open Rehearsal for Informal Showing
Sat: 14:00-16:00 (120 min)
Family and friends are welcome to watch the rehearsal, which will be mostly concerned with blocking (stage spacing) and the artistic focus of the dancers.

Informal Showing
Sat, 16:30-17:00 (30 min)
There will be an introduction to and informal showing of the Classical Variations/Repertoire and the Contemporary Repertoire that has been studied during the Intensive on Saturday afternoon. You are most welcome to ask friends and family members to attend at no cost, followed by refreshments.
Saturday, 28 January will be an open day. All are welcome to observe all the classes, rehearsal and Informal Showing at no charge. Refreshments will be served for all participants and guests at the end of the day.

Classes of Classical Ballet, Classical Variations/Repertoire, and Contemporary Repertoire are suitable for intermediate, advanced and professional levels. Floor Barre class is open to all levels. Please refer to previous sections for further details.

Dress Code Guidelines

  • Integrated colours that don’t break the body line for leotard, tights, etc. for all the classes.
  • For Classical Variations/Repertoire, practice skirt for women, t-shirt with sleeves and tights for men. TBA for the Showing.
  • Comfortable rehearsal clothes and a couple of pairs of socks for Contemporary Repertoire. TBA for the Showing.

Timothy Gordon

Timothy Gordon An internationally recognized classical dance teacher and choreographer

Timothy’s professional teaching career began at Ballet Frankfurt in Germany where he first started teaching and coaching. He later joined the teaching faculty at the Australian Ballet School where he was a senior teacher and choreographer. As a freelance teacher and choreographer he has taught, coached and choreographed for many of the world’s major dance companies and has contributed in the development of a great many professional dancers and teachers. Among the institutions and companies where Timothy has taught are:

Royal New Zealand Ballet and New Zealand School of Dance, Black Grace, Unitec, University of Auckland, AUT University, Australian Ballet and Australian Ballet School, Stuttgart Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet and School, Vienna State Opera Ballet, Béjart Ballet Lausanne and Rudra (school), Hong Kong Ballet, Singapore Dance Theatre, West Australian Ballet and Academy Of Performing Arts, Victorian College of the Arts, Sydney Dance Company and the Tokyo Ballet.

He credits his teaching influences to Joan and Monica Halliday, Kathleen Gorham, Dame Margaret Scott, Asaf Messerer, Prof. Eugene Valukin and Marika Besobrasova.

Timothy has a wealth of experience in teaching, coaching and directing classical ballet to all ages and stages of student development. He emphasizes co-ordination of torso, arms and head, the use of weight, alignment and musicality through a series of logical and artistic dance combinations.

Also a qualified teacher of the Alexander Technique, Timothy has incorporated this knowledge and approach in his teaching practice.

Chiara Ferri

Classical Variations/Repertoire assistant
Chiara Ferri Chiara started dancing in Florence with Marga Nativo and then continued her training in classical ballet at the Academie de Danse Classique with Marika Besobrasova. She began her professional career in Switzerland, dancing with the Stadtheater in Bern and in Luzern. She then joined the English National Ballet in London, where she performed roles in most major classical Ballets at different venues around the world and worked with many talented choreographers and dancers. Chiara is now teaching ballet classes at the Performing Arts School.

Katie Priffitt

Contemporary tutor and Contemporary Repertoire assistant
Katie Priffitt Katie Proffitt started dancing in New Plymouth at Clare Patten's academy of dance. She was then attended the Australian Ballet school and was fortunate to dance at the Melbourne state theatre and Sydney Opera house Katie furthered her dance training at Unitec in contemporary dance since then she has danced fulltime for Black grace dance company, Royal Carribean cruise lines and P&O Cruise lines.

Izumi Griffiths

Administrator
Izumi Griffiths Izumi was trained in classical ballet under Mrs Yuki Takagi in Tokyo. She first performed with Company Z Dance in 2006 in Juliet's Code and recently participated in Sriwhana Spong's video installation 'Lethe-wards'. Izumi is also a webmaster and administrative support adviser for both Company Z Dance and Timothy Gordon.

Justin Tregenza
Justin began dance at age 17 and was initially coached by his mother, Lisa Tregenza, a former RAD registered teacher. He attended Mt Eden Ballet Academy where he was taught by Heather and Melinda Palmer. In his second year of dancing he was awarded distinction for both the RAD Intermediate and Advanced Foundation examinations. Justin has attended classes with Timothy Gordon for the last two years. Timothy has greatly influenced Justin’s understanding of dance and has been an invaluable source of inspiration. Justin studies Art History and Philosophy at Auckland University and is looking forward to appearing in Timothy's next production Mesmerisisms for Company Z Dance in 2012.
